Rebuild, or not to rebuild OM616??
I have a sweet little 240D that I'm fixing up for my son. The engine runs fine, just has what I feel to be excessive blowby. If you take the oil fill off when it's running, hang on. Plus oil gets thrown around through the opening. Problem is, I have rebuilt gasser 4 cyl. motors as well as big block V8's, but never a diesel. Would it basically be same procedures, remove head, get head rebuilt, remove pistons, replace rings, new crank bearings, rehone cylinders, yada yada... BTW the motor only has 142,000 on the clock. I hate to throw in the towel on the block.

You stated that the "engine runs fine".
I take this to mean that you never have a problem starting it, correct? If so, then why spend $2500. to reduce your blowby? Is this vehicle one that will remain with you for the next 15 years? Will your son notice the blowby? I fail to see the benefit of rebuilding this engine unless you decide that you'll restore the entire vehicle. |
BC ive seen the car, the blowby is pretty bad, we did take the oil filler cap off at the gtg while it was running and we were hit with oil 4 feet from the cap..but it does run pretty good, although some p/o re wired the glow system and only wired 3/4 of the plugs..

well there's one...and it's stick too! I can only guess it's a 240D given that. Lack of description makes ad a bit suspect but if someone is interest let me know and I'll have a look |

It's the time and the cost that, personally, I'd avoid unless the vehicle is a keeper. You can find a decent 616 or 617 for under $1K and swap it over one or two weekends if the blowby is really bothering you and the engine becomes difficult to start in "cold" weather. |

Looks like Lakeview area. They have palm trees with silly stilts to hold them up. Not native, but imported and they don't stick will in the sandy soil, hence the stilts.
I also have banana trees in my backyard. And they grow like weeds. and agreed...car looks real nice in the photos which is what makes me suspect. Very clean looking palomino interior too..$2K seems a bit low unless it has 300K on the odo or something. |

Can't you just add the 4th wire? Plug opens right up usually.
