Unhappy Tranny cooler line leak - W123

Just thought I would give everyone a heads-up. My 300D just developed a leak in the hard line to (or from) the tranny cooler on the right side. This is the line that goes through a little clip thats held in place by one of the lower oil pan allen bolts. It looks like the rubber grommet in the clip deteriorated and allowed the line to rub against the metal clip, causing a leak. I'm off to find a new line. You may want to take a look at that rubber piece next time you're under the car.

I have seen this before. A simple repair is to get a piece of rubber hose that fits snugly over the hard pipe, cut the bad section of hard pipe out, slide the hose into place and clamp it. In addition, I have seen this same repair during replacement of the rubber section of the oil cooler hoses. Seemed to work well.

Mine had a damaged sealing surface at the flex line joint. In order to get it to seal, the PO torqued the flex line to about 10X recommended torque.

I bought a new pipe from the dealer for $54. Junked the stock rubber/plastic grommet and made one from rubberized cork gasket material.

That's exactly what I did this morning as a temporary repair, I used fuel line so it would stand up to the tranny fluid. I should have the correct replacement part installed by sometime next week.

I'm not sure I would trust this repair for high pressure oil cooler lines. Too much pressure, too much risk if it fails.

been there done that...

seems a common point of failure - I just replaced the hard line and made a new rubber cushion for it - I check it when I'm under there, but it seems the PO ignored an oil leak that caused the problem in the first place.

Mine also had quite a few oil leaks when I got it, that's probably what killed the rubber piece.
