Coolant capacity 240D

I'm changing the coolant (Zerex GO-5) in my 240D. I drained what was in it into a pan to put in old 1 gallon milk jugs to take for disposal. I only got 1/2 gallon out. Whassup with that?? Whenever I would look into the radiator it looked full. I only took out the one plug on the drivers side on the bottom. Should I take out both? Manual says 11.4 quarts, almost 3 gallons.

Did you take the drain plug out of the engine block ?
Did you get the coolant out of the heater core ?

Mark-

Just in front of the starter is a 19MM plug to drain the block. Highly recommended that you do this. There is no other drain on the rad (just looks like one on the other side).

You don't know what you are missing draining the block on an OM617.

Dirty rotten Haynes manual said nothing of the block drain. I allready did the Zerex, but I'll buy another gallon and do it over now that I know how to drain the block. Thanks Rick.

Soon as the weather cools I plan on replacing the Green coolant with the MB coolant. One way of draining the entire content is to attach a garden hose to the heater hose and let the tap water pressure push all the green stuff out. To do this the thermostat needs to be out.
You obviously do not want tap water to remain in the system, disconnect the garden hose, attach a funnel to the same hose and fill in the system with distilled water, drain the distilled water just enough to fill it back with the coolant and you are done.
