W123 window switch repair/removal?

My '83 240D has several intermittant switches. Most of the power windows and the moonroof are erratic. Most of the posts in searching talk about removing the panels to remove the switches but some make vague mention of just removing the switches.

Can the switches be removed without disasembling the dash or console or can just the rockers be removed for switch repair without removing the switches? If so, what is the easiest/safest way?

Thanks,

You can't take the switch out from the top

If you try taking the switch out form the top, you will destroy the wood trying to pry the switch out. It is simple to remove the console. Just remove the ashtray. Look at the FSM. It goes step by step on how to remove the console.

Yeah, it's not very hard to remove the panelling that the switches are in, so I would do that and push the switches out from the back. You would probably need a really teeny screwdriver to pry them without damaging anything. I'm not sure exactly what your interior looks like but I'm assuming all your switches are in wood panelling.

I would guess that a good cleaning of the switches would eradicate your intermittency problem.

Hello, how do you take out the wood panel that those switches are in? I have taken out the ashtray but it is hung up at the back where the panel curves down toward the little tray thing under the driver seat arm rest? Thanks.

Slide to the rear after you remove the console carpet piece. There's a stud about 1" long that hold the back piece. It slide in and out of a mounting hole as you remove/install. Usually broken off by the gorilla that justs lifts on the back - don't break it!

On my 84 300D remove the Ash Tray. Remove the to Phillps Head Screws and pull out the Ash Tray inner frame.
After that I believe the council slides back aways as there is a hook at the very inside rear. After you have cleared the hook you can carefully lift it up.

Below in the pics ounce the switch is open the little Rockers and Balls can get lost. To a lesser extent those springs also come out.

The other pic shows the burnt contacts that I scraped with a Knife (the Rockkers contacts also).

It would not hurt to take a look at your Fuese if your car uses this type of Fuse.
Below is what I found when my Right Front and Left Rear Window did not work.

Is it possible to disassemble early style tandem window switches (w/chrome surround and ridged button)? As the "hinge"/pin is not visible on the sides of the switches.

Thank you. Was abit tough but finally slid back...requires a bit of finger strength and did not hurt to cean the junk out of the corners. I think mine has never been out.

When did mine I did manged to break my 1" pin off. I replaced the broken plastic Pin with a Screw that screws in from the outside.
