Charging Light ON and other Gremlins!
Greetings,
Well its been a while since I posted last so here's an update. The timing chain rental went up in smoke and I'm currently waiting a new tool I ordered to fix my 1985 190D. But in the mean time I picked up another 190D for $300. Don't get excited yet as the problems follow. Currently the battery light stays on. Dim at idle and bright at full throttle. I'm also seeing the battery light and the light next to it turn on after the car has been shut off and relays clicking on?!?!?! I can make the lights turn off by moving the turn signal arm. Is this related to the factory alarm system? I have to pull the battery terminal off every time or the battery dies. The strange thing with the battery light is that it does charge the battery. I jump started the car and the car recharged the battery fine?!?!?! Please let me know where to look! Thanks! |

Not the classic symptoms of a bad voltage regulator but I'd start there. The voltage regulator is held into the back of the alternator by two Philips head screws. Pull it out and check the condition of the brushes. If the contact surfaces are both clean and bright then probably not the problem. If one is notably darker or sootier than the other then it's not making good contact with the armature or whatever it is that rotates in the alternator. It's a $25-40 part depending on source and brand.
