There's a bit of debate about that. The SDL manual was written when commonly available ATF was Dexron or Dexron II. Some say Dexron III available today causes the system to leak. Safest bet seems to be auto parts store power steering fluid.

Do a search on flushing the power steering system. And there's a filter in the reservoir that should be replaced periodically.

I flushed mine out completely last year with a cheapo synthetic, then I filled the system with Valvoline SynPower and have been using it ever since. Seems to work great!

changed my power steering and filter, replaced with Dexron III . This was 3-4 thousand miles ago, and no leaks at this time.

I used MB PS fluid, bought at the dealership. It's not that expensive, and I figured it was a safe bet.

Dextron ATF is what you put in there. Leaking with ATF? Never had one leak ever. The manual says to use it also, so a leak is not the fault of ATF, just seals that would have leaked with any spec fluid.
