What are crossover valves 1,2 and 3 for?

Does anyone know what climate control vacuum cross-over valves #1,2 and 3 do? I have leaks in all of these and I've gotta dive in and replace whatever diaphragms these valves are for. Oh yeah, its on an 83 300sd.

Mb doesn't label them 1,2,3, etc; but, rather, from top to bottom 15, 14, 13, 18, 17, 16. ( I know... why? )

15. defrost
14. leg room flap
13. center nozzle flap
18. scoop air flap
17. fresh air/recirculate/main (large stroke)
16. fresh/ recirculate/ main (small stroke)

I presume that you are referring to the "switchover valves" that live in a row next to the radio and climate control.

#1 is on the bottom. It controls the fresh air/recirc air flap. It's a dual diaphragm pod accessed by removing the glove box.

#2 is above #1. It also controls the fresh air/recirc air flap. It's also a dual dipahragm pod accessed by removing the glove box.

#3 is above #2. It controls the scoop pod. It's a single diaphragm pod that you can rebuild with a $5.00 rubber diaphragm. AFAIK, it's located right above the driver's right foot.

Do yourself a favor if you've got the system open. Connect the supply vacuum permanently to the output of #4 and bypass #4 completely. You'll get the center vents working 100% of the time in all seasons and you can regulate them with the dash sliders.
