Does your 240D ROAR?

So, I am the proud owner of a 1982 240D. Around town in the lower gears this car Roars! I've only had the pleasure of driving this one and by comparison Dubmutant's 300D (fairly quiet).

I'd like to get behind the wheel of a another 240D in top condtion to hear the sounds of a finely tuned machine.

What's yours sound like? Audio Files anyone?

My 240D and 300D make about the same amount of noise at the same rpm, but I do tend to use more rpms in the 240D. You can hear it wind up between gears (maybe 3500-4000 rpm), but nothing I would describe as a roar. The 300D probably has a little more sound insulation, but not that much. Is your exhaust system intact?

No signs of exhaust leakage. I know it's a little late on the shifts, not even close to the dots though. Could it be high RPMs?

BTW, Craig,

Thanks for your input on the subject of tire size/ speedo/ gear ratio between the 300D and 240D.

They do rev up quite a bit in each gear, and the gears are lower than a 300D by about 12% so you can definitely hear the engine when you are accelerating. If you are just hearing "normal" engine noises it's probably just that you're not used to it. If you are hearing any mechanical noises (knocks, etc.) you may want to look into it.

She runs strong and loud. I'm just not used to it I'm sure. Always think I sound like a big ol' tractor trailer. All I need to complete the soundscape is a jack brake.

Yeah, that's quite a bit of noise for 70 horsepower. I don't know where you're located, but the best thing for you might be to drive another one to get a good comparison of noise, power, speed, etc. They really don't feel like any other car, so it's hard to get a baseline of what's normal.

Not like any other car, that's for sure. I like it though. There's something a little too anonymous in the drive of the 300D that I was in. This 240D has character.

They do seem to run louder and rougher than the 5 cylinder turbos. They sound a lot different too. Not as good a sound IMO

The only thing annomous about the car is the color.
Do you have no appreciation for the sublime?
I can only guess that you are going thru denial. Its ok though. Once you sell it and get a diesel with a real engine you can joke and jostle with the big boys for real.

Nah, I'll be glad to just turtle along. Truth is we'll get there about the same time.

I wouldn't trade the manual controls in my 240 for a turbo. Not just yet anyway.

Now if you were to offer me a coupe - black with tan runnin' strong? maybe.

BTW, didya pull the dash yet to get those center vents open?

My 300D clatters at idle. Above 2000 RPM, it sounds like a gas car.

The 240 has a very mechanical sound to it. You couldn't tell the two engines were anything alike unless you looked under the hood.

On the highway, the 300 sounds like a turbine, the 240 sounds like a small marine diesel. Hammering away.

Someone explain why. I want to say injection timing but there must be more to it than that.

Mbzkid,

Well-said. That's a spot-on description of the phenomenon I'm listening to and my reaction to it.
