On the plus side, there are fewer kids going to college nowadays for a variety of reasons. Once guys like us retire, there may be less competition for jobs among degreed engineers in the future.

I'm an ex-mechanical engineer - good luck to you after college.
I presently have many EE, ME, Civil, Comp Sci and ARCH clients, but any one industry can be feast or famine. I remember the pay scale surveys when I entered college in 1993. Since then they have flip-flopped every 2-5 years depending on demographics and the economy.

Veterinary schools are failing 50% of students and you can't find a clinic without an opening. Same for nursing. Wouldn't want to be an engineer again right now...

You can find ME work in lots of different sectors. It helps to know people as well. We have ME's employed here that do machinery design work. We service the baking industry at my company. I do not know that pay scale, though.

Texas Engineering, a SolidWorks VAR hires ME and will train them to be sellers or instructors for thier software.

Don't worry about it, there are always jobs if you are good and you are flexible (location, industry, etc). I'm a ME and I've been doing just fine for the last 25 years. However, I would stay away from U.S. manufacturing, we can all see which direction that's going.

One thing that helps is to join your local professional society and go to the monthly technical meetings. It's a long process, but once you become a familiar face to the members there, it's a lot easier to find work since you're not a stranger anymore. If it's anything like the society I belong to (ASM International), they give a lot of incentives for students to join and attend meetings.

Good to hear that your position remains. I'm very sorry that things are so touch and go right now, hopefully you'll be able to find a position that meets your needs. I truly hope that you don't have to sell your car

Actually, the company that I work for treats me very well. Sales are bad right now. The joke about me is if I die I will be dug up and returned to the office and if I go to another company I will be shot.
