Strange metal "clank" at cold start

When I start my 81-300SD in the morning, it has a higher pitch metal clank (separate from the normal diesel clak) for about 10 seconds at random intervals. It does not do it again during the day upon warm restarting. I have not been able to narrow the origin down except to the engine or possibly the turbo area.

Is this anything to worry about or do I just have to wait to see if it gets worse to diagnose it?

Thanks,

Don

See if you can hear where it's coming from. If it's the vacuum pump coming apart, you want to do something about it... soon.

It's called "nailing". As the seasonal temprature drops the more posts we will have about nailing and non working heaters.
And nailing is no real problem from what I understand; but it sounds like a rod knock.
Diesel purge will probably fix it.
Combine that with a valve adjustment, the nailing will probably dissappear.

Thanks for the info. I adjusted the valves about a month ago and everything seemed fine. I will add some Rislone to the oil change, since several thread searches seemed to think it would help. Hopefully it works. It is not that bad, I just wanted to make sure I wasn't being a nimrod by not taking it seriously.
