I have some areas where the "varnish is missing. I'm thinking about applying a marine varnish, but I do not know if it will cause the ols stuff to peel or not.
Any ideas?

I assume we are talking about the finish cracking or crazing. If you decide to refinish the wood read everything you can about it. Original finish was probably hand rubbed laquer. I have had mixed results on 114s. Main problem was I did not let wood stabilise between steps after chemical stripping I believe. Whatever you do don't sand the wood. You want to preserve the natural patina. Now if wood is bleached out with time you also may want to stain but usually not required. You can do a good job at home but should use a spray gun. Although they can be done without it.

Looked into it. There are a lot of options depending on how picky you are. I decided it wasn't that bad and to live with it until I replace it with new wood.
