Starting my 1982 240D in the winter

I am having trouble starting my 1982 240D in the cold winter months. My workplace does not have a outlet for me to plug the car in. After 10-12 hrs l cant start the car, l usually have to boost the battery. Any suggestions on how l can combat this problem.

Have you checked/changed your glow plugs? I believe they make diesel powered block heaters if you really need one.

I used to have that problem.

I fixed it by moving south.

A properly working glow system, a good battery and correctly adjusted valves will help a lot.

I reiterate what Len mentioned.

You need a properly functioning set of glow plugs, valves set to proper lash, and a new (less than three year old) battery of the proper size to start an older diesel at cold temps.

Compression also is an issue. If the engine is marginal on compression, even all of the above won't allow a start if the temp drops very low. "Very low" is relative to the compression in the engine.

If the compression is low and all of the above items are checked and verified, the only recourse if you wish to keep the vehicle is to install a diesel fired block heater for a cost of about $800. or so. The engine will start at any temperature.

I'm leaning towards 3 main factors when winter starting. Glow plugs must be efficient (ie all of them actually working), lighter oil weights, and properly adjusted valves.
