Can someone please explain to me....
I know some euro cars with the origina headlamps came with "vaccume leveling" systems......
can someone please explain this to me? (without merely posting a link) thanks.. oh, and what does this mean for my 300SD? can I get a VLS for my 300SD? (if I had euros)

i want to say the VLS was for when the car had a heavy load and it kept the lights on the road and not aiming up into the trees.

They still have it too, we went there in 2002 and had a C220 cdi wagon (diesel!) and it had the nifty headlight adjustment thing. I played with that maybe a bit too much. Its probably just for the load issue, maybe for driver preference too.

so, then this system bypassed the screw type adjusters all together?
In dash adjustable.....hmmmmm....it'd be kinda neat if you could make then adjustable horizontally as well...and tie the switch in with the steering system somehow...I feel an idea coming on!! ....

Its a feature that lets you adjust the aim of the head lights from inside the car. That way, you dont have to adjust them under the hood.... Takes the guesswork out of it. You can see exactly where you are aiming them as you are doing it.....

As far as the side to side, I think the last car that had that was the Tucker! I think we don't have the height adjustment here because of Federal DOT regulations. Just like it took us eons to get non sealed beam lights.

Some Euro trim Citroen DS21's have headlights that turn with steering. The Lexus RX330 has it also. I'm sure the trend will pick up.

Its a small wheel at the side of the headlamp switch. It has 4 positions, 0 (normal) 1,2 and 3. The position you select depends on the loading of the car. If you've got 4 passengers and a bootfull of luggage, then 2 or 3 will be best. Just a bootfull of luggage and yourself, 3 or 4. Just a driver and passenger, 0. You can see how it varies.
At the back of the control are 2 pipes, violet and grey. The pipes use the vacuum system, and are connected to the headlamp assemblies. Move the switch on the dash, and the headlamps move accordingly. Note that you can only move the lamps down from their normal (0) position. You cannot use this system to gain visibility unless you're driving with a heavy load, and you put the lamps in the normal position - at which point you'll be dazzling other traffic. |

51 to be exact, all handbuilt, so most of the parts weren't interchangable. That cyclops headlight is pretty damn awesome though.
