Barry,

What causes the GP to have a voltage potential when engine is running?

Thermocouple effect of different alloys under heat. We found one volkswagen at about 20 milli volts once if not higher. Was advanced to the point of detonation. Most new plugs with timing about right seem to come in about 10.5-13.5 volts. Favoring around 12 milli volts. But there seem to be exceptions where the voltage is lower. Not enough background to give accurate numbers but if really high milli volts it means you have a problem as it is way too hot in the combustion chamber. Either too much fuel or bad primary timing. The plugs are not linear so it's only a guide.

Glow Plugs

I bought a 1984 300d a month or so ago it got hard to start but i noticed that it had new glow plugs in it the gp light went out so I started looking for the problem after testing was done I had #2 and #4 gp bad took them out and they were AC I put Champion back in it because that is all I got get without ordering them and a week or so without my ride..
I also think Bosh would be the best if I can find them..

You can get the reamer off of Ebay for about $39.00

"Monarch" [sp?] is another brand...

to steer clear of. I had a complete set of new Monarchs in my 240D and they all had to be replaced within 18 months. I'm all Bosch from now on and the $1 or so additional is well worth it.

I have had my 300D for about 8 years / 140K miles, and have not replaced any glow plugs. I bet they are the original Bosch plugs.

My 240D has unknown (plenty) mileage. I replaced 1 plug when I first got the car, about 2 1/2 years ago.

Benefits of living in a warm climate, the glow plugs don't stay on as long.
