Primary fuel filter removal/replacement

Please forgive my ignorance but I am new to the Mercedes world and loving every bit of it even though I am extremely green. My question is I am trying to replace the main fuel filter on my 82 300SD and am having trouble getting it off. It looks to be a standard spin on filter but for the life on me can not budge it. Do you have to remove the largest bolt that looks to run down the middle of the filter housing or do I just need to go and purchase the appropiate sized filter wrench? Thanks for the help. This forum has been extremely helpful so far and I hope someday to have enough knowledge to be able to have some input myself.

Go to Auto Shack and get a Haynes manual for your particular car. (about 14.95...money well spent! ) It is really, really helpful. Keep it beside your phone book, or in the bathroom...
Anyway! I think I remember that fuel-filter housing bolt is also machined to include a small pin-hole vent to bleed-off air bubbles. It will surprise you with a squirt or two of diesel when you are trying to remove it or if it is not torqued down properly after you change the filter.
Make sure you have a good absorbent towel/rag to soak-up spillage and then remove the rag to check for no leaks with the engine running for a few moments to pressurize the lines.

Gud luc and lotsa fun with your new tractor

Make sure

that the plastic/rubber fitting atop the filter is in place when you put the new one on. And, this filter can get hot, so better wait until it cools down before removing and replacing with a new one. Would probably be good to fill the filter with fuel before replacing, although I don't knwo too much about the 300SD.

yes, make sure you fill it with fuel, sea-foam(my favorite),atf, diesel purge, or svo when you change it. I run Wvo so i carry a can of seafoam and a new filter. the unopened can of sea foam is cleaner-easier to carry around than diesel or svo. i use a quart of atf for the cummins.oh- this is actually called the secondary filter. the primary is the little inline one. go figure.

Actually you don't have to remove it. Just loosen it, and spin the filter off from the bottom. I know, I know, you have basically removed the bolt....
