The 87 SDL's you can stick a magnet to, and the ones off the 88 or 89 420SEL that are in my basement are magnetic as well.

So when where they aluminum? MB also makes no mention of this in any of the W126 literature I have.
Tap on a body panel then on the hood or trunk, most definatley aluminum. A bit of paint flaked off my hood by a headlight, and it was shiny and never rusted (after months and months) then I painted over it. A magnet will stick because the underframe of the hood and trunk is steel.

Tapping tells you nothing. Tap on the a late XJ8 and tell me whats not steel!

A magnet will stick to any part of the trunk lid and hood. Heck my SD has heavy rust on the trunk lid.

I have never seen any official MB documents that mention the W126 being made out of anything other than steel. In my 1987 S class book, that talks about different aspecs of the W126 it says this:

Every Mercedes-Benz S class is precison welded at more than 4,700 individual points, creating a single monocoque structure of formidable torsional rigidity and sheer strength. Numerous different types of steel are used to form a Mercedes Benz body; almost 11 percent of total body wieght is accounted for by HSLA (high strength/ low alloy) steel-an exotic metallurdical advance, combining remarkable strength with remarkable lightness. Page 14, Mercedes-Benz 1987 S-Class.

Sorry until I see evidence otherwise, I will continue to maintain that the W126 is all steel, various types of steel though.

37 Feet is still damn good for the W116. W123s are about 39 feet if i recall. My W123 turns tighter than my dad's 2000 Accord though which was surprising to me considering how much bigger my car was. The turning circle figures seem hit and miss, i get different numbers from different sources.

No claim as to what hoods are made of, just an observation. My old '82 Sd had a very light hood, and there was a 116 SD at the yard that had a very heavy one. Night and day difference. Mabee lighter hoods/trunks happened through '78-'80.
As for weights, heres a good link:http://home.hiwaay.net/~gbf/mbmodels.html

My 1980 W116 300SD has an aluminum hood and trunk. Here in humid Florida its not such a great thing. The car came from California 2 years ago with some minor paint chips on the hood. I neglected to get some touchup paint, and last time I waxed it I noticed "tinworm" (aluminum worm?) starting around those chips. I finally got some touchup paint and scratched the chips back to good metal. It's aluminum- very light and pliable. You have to be careful with the knife as the stuff scratches easily and the knife can dig into it. I don't know whether all the 300SDs had this or not. Seems to me I have seen some W116 300SDs in junkyards with rusty hoods. Maybe it was just an '80 300SD thing, because the 1980 SD was the only W116 in production that year and it was cheaper to get them run in aluminum (?).

Ar upullit , I was able to snag a fantastic set of hood and trunk from a 77 280se that is all steel (just in case I ever need them in the next 20 years)

According to the manual at w116.org, the shortwheelbase turning circle is 11.59m or 38 ft. The W116 SELs were 39 ft. Anybody look up the W126s?

Edit: I looked up the W126 turning circle on Braingears and it is listed as either 11.62, 11.8, 11.9 or 12.4m for various models.

I know where you got it......... You are talking turning RADIUS at 18 feet, he is talking turning CIRCLE or DIAMETER......... 18 foot radius = 36 foot turning circle.......... The numbers jive..........

From the official MB Service Manual, Series 116, Volume 1. Unloaded wgt. = 3890 lbs., firing order 1-2-4-5-3, and the turning circle-minimum diameter is 38.0 ft. Not trying to be cute but these manuals are loaded with stuff that may or may not be useful at the right time.

One thing I never believed was the weight of a 1987 or 1986 300E. From some sources I've seen it seems they reduced the weight to 3200 lbs?? That's an enormous decrease, and if they did pull that off and increase the safety and chassis rigidity of the car (which i know they did for the w124s) then I have to hand it to the engi's. A lot different than what's going on today, weight is going up up up. Then again that's compensated for by huge HP increases

Just checked my 1980 w116 300sd with a magnet.
Both Hood and trunk lid are non-magnetic also their frames are non-magnetic. The bumpers are also non-magnetic.

The rest of the car is quite magnetic.

My 300sd seems to have a zero turning radius. I just sit in one place and it spins.

I see by your auto list that you own a 94 Buick Roadmaster. I have same
with only 7000 miles on the odometer---keeping it for posterity LOL.
It's a real automobile and still new. My 84 300TD gets used most frequently.
Just thought I should contact another Buick owner.

Where GM got it right = Full size RWD V8.
The Buick Roadmaster, Caprice, and Impala SS were an awesome end of an era for GM.

Well I have never seen one, and I have seen a ton of W126's.

My 82 SD did have some nice rust on the trunk lid though, its still running though, just saw it the other day.

I have continued to collect W126 literature and I have yet to see any mention of aluminum in the structure.
