Where to get specs on 300sd?
 

I was wondering where to get some of the specs on a 1980 300sd? The turning circle and weight are the two things I am trying to find now.

Thanks for the response and link. The link did not contain info on my 300sd but did have some for the 1977 240d.

I think the turning radius is about the same and will keep searching for the weight.

The weight is about 3900 lb. The aluminum hood and trunk helps keep the weight down. The turning circle is about 18 feet. It will turn tighter then the 123 or 126 sedand due to the zero offset geometry in the steering.

The hood and trunk are aluminum? On all W116's?

W116's have a tighter turning radius than the W126's? wow...and the 126's have an excellent turning radius...I can make a U-turn on my sidestreet without touching anything on either side! :D My fiance's buick probably has a 45ft radius (not even kidding).

I am not sure if the W116 have the aluminum hood/trunk....I am thinking they don't....I thought that was a "new feature" on the W126 series....

My 1980 300sd has a aluminum trunk and hood.

actually the 300sd is the only 116 that had an Aluminum hood. The 6.9 has a steel hood as well as the 450, 350 and 280 S, SE, and SEL.

and w116.org does not have the spex for the 300SD (actually 90% of that website is a worship page for the 6.9)

Those 450SEL 6.9's must be immense beasts... :D What do they weigh? 5,000lbs??? :eek:

I think that’s an urban legend. I have yet to come across a W126 that you can't stick a magnet to the hood and trunk. The SD's are both rusty.

Lets see the 82 SD's are rusting so most certainly steel.
The 87 SDL's you can stick a magnet to, and the ones off the 88 or 89 420SEL that are in my basement are magnetic as well.

So when where they aluminum? MB also makes no mention of this in any of the W126 literature I have.

Where did you get that info. Turning circle is more like 37 feet. 18 feet is ridiculous. A tiny car like a Corolla or a Miata is like 30 feet.

I dont know where I came up with 18 feet, Maybe that was on a Harley site?:silly: The weight figure should be right though, and the 116 body 300SD all had aluminum trunk and hood.

Thanks for the responses. I have driven my 116 and 123 MB's for 25-30 years and never knew that the 116 had aluminum anywhere on it.

The reason I am asking is that I am looking at new cars. Want something that handles halfway decent and is safe. Am going to keep the 300sd for in town driving and the new car for all around driving.

So far have looked at and driven the Toyota Avalon and Ford Five Hundred. I was surprised at at how well they both felt on the road, especially the Ford. Hoping that Ford will follow GM and offer a 100,000 mile warranty so am not in any hurry to buy a car yet.

I don't know anyone that owns either of these cars so am going to try to rent one of each first unless I find something else that handles well and will not eat me alive with repair costs.
