My first major water leak

There are puddles of water in both wheel wells (and the rear driver's side floor is damp) in the trunk of my wife's 81-300SD. I read the fourm articles. This is what I have found in the trunk: I unclogged the plugs to allow for drainage and found no water around the antenna. The rear lights are free of water and moisture. The water is coming onto the wheel arches from above. On the outside, the seal on the rear glass is old and starting to crack and separate from the body.

So, I think it is the rear glass seal. NOW, I do not have to buy new glass, do I? I just need the seal, adhesive, etc...right?

This all started when my wife heard something like a thud from the trunk when she brakes hard. I thought it was something rolling in the trunk. So, I am still not sure what is making the sound...I guess that is for another thread!

Any suggestions, in addition to the archived article, will be appreciated.

Thanks, Don

Yea boy. Rear window seal. Personally I wouldn't do it. Take it to the glass shop to have it done. In most cases they can simply take the old glass out, put on the new seal and re-install the old glass. the glass shop will not gurantee the old glass won't break. Usually the old glass can be reused.

My 240 needs both front and rear done.

Cheers,

Bill

tail lamps would not leak on the fender wells as mentioned.

Cheers,

Bill

In my sunroof tracks, there is water on the passenger side front. I poked a coat hanger as far as I could.

Where do those drains go? Are there drains anywhere else on the sunroof other than the front ones?

Also, would it be any benefit to putting the windshield caulk around the rear windshield until I can get the seal replaced?

Thanks,

Don

Too late now but you should've used string trimmer line. More flexible and won;t scratch the paint.

The lines in the front of the sunroof go down the A pillars then [if my memory serves me] down the hinge side of the door jambs. Pour a little water and you'll see where it runs out underneath. Could be clogged there too.

Yes, there are lines out the back too. I don't have an SD myself so I don't know where they come out at. A little water test will answer that. Same thing....string trimmer line.

If you want to try and seal the windshield, go to the auto store and find windshield sealant and do not use silicone. I had a car once that someone used silicone here, there and everywhere. It CAUSES rust! A search here will turn up lots of info on that topic. My 240 needs gaskets and I am just going to replace them. Sealant makes it difficult to remove the old glass when you do replace the rubber. Could cause more expense by the glass breaking when the shop goes to remove the old glass. Got my new seals from fleabay. They were cheap too compared to other suppliers. 1/2 the cost.

Cheers,

Bill

No silicone...please

Check out Rusty's Windshield seal Part # O9036-16165 @ $57.90

Take it to a glass shop and have them do the remove and replace. Money well spent.
I would also replace the Rear Window seal at the same time cause the installer very likely can give you a better price for a twofer.

Motor on!
