How about shifting it in a lower gear manually.

I do it all the time.
I think I'm better at judging when to down
shift than my tranny is.
I have noticed that more often than not the
tranny would stay in gear even though the cars
speed was to low.

I wish I had a 5sp slushbox.

Louis.

Paul we had the same idea.

i have two parts cars already . you can downshift with the gearshift but its not as nice as having a good switch. my brother and my dad have turbo diesels and they drive and shift really well. makes me want to have a good working one.
oh well i guess the 240 will have to do

If the kick down is a deal breaker, why not take it to an indy mechanic? Couldn't take them long to fix, and apparantly it is very important. There are times when it's OK to take them in for service.......

I'm sure there is one good indie in this link
that can help you find this problem and fix it.

Is the kickdown really that important to you?

My 300SD has been kicked down by switch twice in two years of driving...

cdplayer

Had a 300CD once that wouldn't kick down either. Got under the car for the first time and found the switch cable had been disconnected and tucked up where you couldn't see it right off. Don't know why. Plugged it back in...worked great!!

Bring it in to a local MB mechanic or (*gasp*) even a dealership for MB, they will 99.9% likely be able to diagnose and fix the issue in a short amount of time. If the car itself is in overall good/usable condition, why throw it away??? The engine alone is worth practically as much as you paid for the car. I'd bring it in somewhere and let them fix it. Throwing a perfectly good car away over a potential $50-100 repair is simply wasteful in my opinion, especially when its a W123 mercedes at stake, one of the best vehicles ever built.

Dude, snap out of it! You think an entire engine swap into a different type car is easier and cheaper than fixing one problem?
Since you have tried and failed, take it to an indy and let them fix it. It is sure to be quick and painless. They know what they are doing, you have simply missed something or replaced a bad part with a bad part.
Get a Kleenex, dry your eyes, and take the car somewhere........

yeah! i agree! bring the your car to the dealer and let them troubleshoot and diagnose the reason why it is not downshifting via the kickdown switch. give up the minimum 1 hour shop charge or labor, then if the job something that you can handle to perform, you do the wrenching, then if not, you might have to let them do it or find an experienced and reliable professional somewhere to do the work for you. don't give up on this car pal! it is not totalled yet!

......or for all we know, maybe it was just a dirty terminal contacts where the circuit is not closing fully and a few squirts of brake /carb cleaner will fix it. hopefully!
