transmission free play at drive shaft?

Please help, I don't know a thing about transmissions, but I may have to learn:
300 SDL: I need to know if this is normal please. I am in the middle of engine and maybe transission swap. On what I think is the good transmission, there is 1/3 revolution free play. I don't get free rotation at any shift lever location (it seems not to go into neutral). Is this right??
The other (bad) transmission is bad because it slips badly in first and second gear. The B2(?) piston has already been replaced. However, it does have a "neutral" location where the output spins freely. If #1 is bad, what am I in for with replacing the B2 band so I get first and second back? Huge job or do-able? (both are out of the car)
thanks.
