USLD and fuel filters
Now that the fuel is much more refined I am finding that my in line filter gets clgged much faster. My diesel comes primarily from the same Chevron station.
Is it possible that the more refined fuel is less hospitable to living organisms and that they are simply starving to death due to lack of sulphur or other goodies that are no longer allowed in this cleaner fuel? Vahe 240D 77 |

You would be correct, the new fuel is cleaner and has an almost detergent-like cleaning ability, so it cleans out slime that may be present in our old diesel tanks....neither of our car's have had any issues though....and I'm pretty sure I've covered at least 2-3,000 miles on ULSD so far.....

i have been using ulsd for 3 weeks now, i drive 190 miles everyday monday-friday, before i started my commute i did a 30k service, the filter is still crystal clear, i will post a picture of the filter if requested. so far no issues for me, takes about 7 gallons per trip. so i average 27-30 mpg

possible problems on ULSD
Hi,
Just filled up on my first tank of ULSD - or what I think is ULSD because it is October now. I have noticed a couple of things. My fuel sender which was marginal (bouncing) just died. Also my car has developed a knock under load that it didn't have under the old D2. Sounds like pinging. If I speed up the rpm, or lower the rpm it goes away. So I'm wondering if this is because of the new fuel? I have a WVO two tank system (I know, I know, maybe my rings are coked) and if I switch back to WVO the car sounds nice. It all started with this new tank. The low sulfur/fuel filter food starvation explanation in this thread sounds reasonable. Maybe there isn't as much to eat in my tank and the bloom is dying. Cheers, Yoko |

My moms passat TDI clogged a fuel filter twice on ULSD. Openening the filter revieled lots of black chunks that had been sitting in the fuel tank possibly from LSD
But now the car is back on biodiesel so no worries. MY 300SD had a fuel leak around the ip, spilled $20 worth of ULSD on the floor So i put in transmission stop leak and it stopped the leak but now i have a power loss even after changing the fuel filters. I have to keep the pedal to the ground to get it going.

I've heard that ULSD has similar cleaning properties to biodiesel but that is just talk -- no scientific evidence has been presented. I suspect we'll learn a lot more as those of you gain experience with ULSD. I'm running B100 (500 miles so far) and still get little bits of black crud in my primary filter but not enough to worry about.
Greasy, you can be Mexican all you want but yes, it bothers me that you have two M-Bs and I have only one (life is so unfair!). See you at the Sacto GTG? Jeremy

The tranny leak additive is probably what's causeing your loss of power.
Yeah, it may have stopped the leak to to the outside but it's probably also clogging your injector internals and IP valves...

fixed pinging problem mentioned above
It has been a few frustrating weeks since I got my ULSD gremlin pinging. It definitely started when I filled up my first tank of ULSD.
Well, I finally solved it. As I mentioned, when I ran WVO it didn't ping. When I ran the old D2 weeks ago, it didn't ping. Now it does on ULSD. Switch back to WVO, no pinging. I retimed (retarded pump) the ip thinking it was a pre-ignition problem. This helped a tiny bit. My s.o. definitely said the car was quieter. But it was still driving me nuts. Mid rpm ping, perfect at idle, perfect at WOT. I checked my valves and they were a tad tight with the exhaust at 0.28 mm but I didn't redo it because I was hoping this was close enough. Finally I decided to pull the injectors to see what was going on. I've run WVO in this car over the last 30k or so. The tips were gunged up. Not only the nozzels, but the pintles had a little spur growing off the end. I tore them down and cleaned them up with a dremel equipped with a brass brush. I put it all back together (2x because of slow leaks) and now it runs great. Somehow the dirty injectors tolerated the old D2 and WVO but not the new ULSD. Hope this helps some of the confused. I sure was confused for the last month. Sorry to hijack this post, just thought I'd give some closure since I'd asked. Cheers |

ULSD story: Saturday night I stopped at a motel in the middle of IA someplace (on my way to NJ) and was approached by a truck driver in the parking lot. He was trying to be helpful and started telling me all about ULSD and how it will destroy my engine unless I use various additives and some motor oil in every tankful. He basically recited every ULSD old wives tale we've every heard. I said something like, there are lots of people concerned about what it may do. He then proceeded to tell me that he had the actual info because he had talked to an injector shop and not even the diesel mechanics he talked to understood the real problem, etc. Then he told me he had a mercedes diesel too, but when I asked which model he was a little fuzzy. He also said he was planning on making bio-diesel. I thanked him and went to my room.
About 20 minutes later I went to the front desk for something and found him lecturing the overweight desk clerk about her diet. I went to bed. |

Or it could simply be that all of the junk clogging your filters is also clogging your in tank screen. Or your steel lines have clogged up from junk breaking loose in the tank. The primary and secondary filters are not the only place that things get stuck. -Jim

See the PDF linked from this thread. It mentions filters, and not because of cleaning like biodiesel. Couldn't be more timely.
