Question How to repair scarred W126 windshield glass?

I'm thinking past my current issues with the glow plug and relay AND the serpentine belt tensioner... in the hopes that someday SOON I'll have my car back up and running!

Anyhow, my question is if anyone here knows of a way to repair a windshield that has a lot of small scratching/scarring. It only has a couple little chips (nothing in line-of-sight areas, they're really no problem) but most of the damage is very small; like lots of little nicks from small rock impacts over the years - but there is a good bit of it, and it makes it a little difficult to see at night and when driving into the western sun. Are there any products out there that can help this, or do I just need a replacement windshield?

Thanks - I'll be posting my results from the other issues in the other current thread about them, but like I said, I am thinking past the current problems and on to the days when I have my Benz back and can enjoy driving it again!

surely in sin city, the insurance companies will fix this for free

in my state, cracks, and chips smaller that a baseball can be fixed for free, no deductable, the glass company hooks up this giant tripod thingy to the windshield, and a hot iron and a pump shoot high pressure stuff into the cracks and chips to render them invisible and strengthens the glass too! call around for info to your insurance agent or local glass repair company...

same in FL, but i think they just replace the entire windshield... im going to have them replace mine since it just got cracked the other day..stupid rock...im afraid of the guy screwing up the trim around the window.. ill but the correct gasket for it instead of using a generic one

The only good way to fix an old pitted windshield is to replace it. Yep, the windshield on the '86 recently suffered a brick..........

Now I get to fight with Liberty Mutual. Seems they have their own glass deal with Safelite. I'm not using Safelite and now they don't wish to pay more than $230. because that's a "fair price". Oh well........looks like they're going to court.......

I can't imagine that this is as good as replacing the whole thing. Maybe for small holes or crack, but to do the whole windshield that way? I'd think it would affect the visibility, and I know it wouldn't hold up as well as glass does.

Blevin,

A Long time ago that question was asked of Tom McCahill, a car tester and writer for Mechanix Illustrated magazine. Tom was a very funny guy and his reply was: "Clean it with a big hammer".

U younger guys probably never heard of Tom but he was responsible for the word "handeling" with respect to the driving characteristics and responces of a car. He once rolled a renault Dauphine because he said he did what was right for a front engine car but not for a rear engine car.
