IP Timing and R/R

I'm planning on doing some MAJOR rust repair in my engine compartment, and while having the engine out, want to do a re-seal and detail, so my question is: is there any way to remove the Injector Pump witout losing my timing?

and, if I remove the IP and seal all orifices up GOOD can I just give it a good scrub to clean it up?

There is a small locking tool which fits the IP and prevents it from rotating. The tool engages in the lug that rotates within the IP. I've never been successful in finding the lug because it's a two man operation. The slot is very tiny....similar to a screwdriver slot.......and the lug can slide right past it.

If you get the tool to function, the IP will be locked at 15° ATDC.

Sure, you can remove the injection pump to clean your engine.

But if you have never removed it before and don't have time for a MAJOR learning curve, and your IP is currently functioning properly and satisfactorily to your desires, if I were you, I would not disturb it, period. But if you want to become proficient in the total management of one of these OM603 engines, then go ahead and take it off and see if you can get it back on right. If it won't start or run right, at least you know that it did before you took it out. Anyway, it just depends on the amount of risk that you are willing to take. Also, re-read the post about the RUN AWAY engine, just in case it won't start and you start trying different things to get it to start.

EDIT: Excuse me, but I thought you were working on an OM603. The OM617 is a piece of cake, I think. But do know it is a piece of cake as compared to working on the OM603 injection pump timing. Anyway, just consider the risk that you are willing to take, in terms of having a clean engine as opposed to having a clean but "potentially" poor running engine as a result of the timing being disturbed. However, the only way to learn is to do it. Just try to make sure that you have another ride, should you get stuck and the car has to sit for a while, while you figure out how to solve the problem, should you have one. Also, replace the gasket between the block and the pump, should you take it out. You also, might want to consider replacing the gasket at the oil filter housing, once you remove it to get the pump off.

Yeah, I have to agree with you there, I'd rather spend the time masking it up when I paint the engine then the hassle of trying to figure out how to get it back on..
