Intake Carbon
After reading the post by Engatwork on his sluge find, I started to wonder about my cars. So today I was planning on doing my Fall "Purge" and oil change and found this when I took off the aircleaner housing on the 240. I bought this car from the PO with only 4,000 miles on rebuilt engine. I have put apx. 82,000 miles with reg. oil changes, valve adjustments and purges. Is this buildup normal ?? The carbon in the intake is 2-4mm thick. I took it off and cleaned it. Sorry no pics of that as I got so messy. Comments-
Thanks

You really need to disable that EGR and remove the butterfly on the intake. That's some nasty stuff.

get some por-15 "MARINE CLEAN", and let it sit in that... then take a wire brush to it...
bummer about that damn EGR working as intended... Usually a BB in the vaccume line before it solves the problem... some plate have been known to appear in place of them also ~Nate

All these years I thought my EGR was not a problem- now I know better. I hope others will learn from my neglect. I took off the intake and disasembled, cleaned with carb cleaner, gas and bottle brushed. Now its soaking in a vat of Simple Green. I guess I now need to re-read all the posts on EGRs On the bright side my car will feel better and my mileage should come back up.
This is what came out of the EGR- Thanks for your support and input
