Recalling the Volvo 245 diesel wagons

Get that one running on bio. and you'll have the most politically correct car in Chicago. Will it have one labrador retreiver or two in the back?

Actually, I hope someone does it. www.brickboard.com is the Volvo resource and a long time ago, I went there frequently becasue there was a Volvo 740 sedan in the family (which I still miss, and which still is running today as far as I know)

The Volvo 245 diesel wagons weren't widely sold in the USA for some reason, but the gas wagons were very popular, and while they had quirks, they were known to be VERY safe, and lasted to star trek mileages.

It was in Europe where they were much more plentiful, at least to a few years ago. On a vacation in Paris, and before that, the UK, you would see them, they seemed huge in proportion to the minis, hatchbacks and small sedans everywhere around them, and MANY of them had the diesel engine in them.

One of my friend's relatives, who took us around Paris, had one, a battered white Volvo 245 wagon, with a diesel engine, and she drove it fearlessly, parked it carelessly, on the sidewalk, anywhere she wanted. It had been hit by a 911 Parisian Porsche that had run a red light, and just bounced off the front fender, taking out the orange repeater light (the 911 was mangled) and that crar was a real road warrior. (I noticed the Mercedes in Paris, even the 560SEC coupes, were pretty trashed) Generally the Parisians didn't care much about their cars, it seemed to me. Lovely city though.

Looks like it needs a MB engine dropped in. Those Volvo diesels are just lengthened VW engines right? Don't they have lubrication problems?

6 cyl Audi diesel is whats used in them. Easy to work on. For $200 I would snatch it right up.

Really?!?!

I have not had any experianec with Volvos myself. I had a former co-worker that had a sedan. It was powered by his curses of it. Always something wrong. The man that I brought my 300D from told me these words about Volvo diesels' "run hard and run fast, they are worse than GM's first diesels".

This is just what I know and have been told. I know that I do not prefer timing belts in engines, especially when the valve train is for more than four cylinders.

Take a long look first. Anyone who claims lighter fluid will work fine in a diesel is a bit lacking in grey matter.
If I recall properly this engine has a plastic gizmo in the throttle linkage on top of the valve cover that is a !@!#! $180 item ... very easy to break.

Basically a stretched 6 cylinder Rabbit engine. Has a very looooong alloy head. Has a timing belt, situated, I think, back by the firewall (?). While my Rabbit is pretty easy to fix, I would think anyone buying one of these is asking for it. Try finding a flat head, for example.
