Engine rebuild question

this is just another one of those MANY thoughts that go thru my head over the course of a day.....

if I rebuilt my 617.950, which has 417,XXXKm on it, what is the likely hood of it needing simply rings and bearings?

I have no current problems with the engine and it runs like a top, and it's been VERY well maintained........I'm just curious....

or will I be ending up with pistons and sleeves on top of that?

start buying the parts...

start buying the parts now.... spread your purchases out...

buy new rings and bearings. buy a gasket set,
buy piston sleves....buy valve guides and seals...
buy new timing chain and guides and tensioner...

read and study the book..... look for a good machine shop for the head.

plan on replacing the pistons too. Most economical way would be to go oversize and have a machine shop bore the existing cylinders. Plan on replacing the oil pump and gear drive for the oil pump too. As stated earlier start buying parts now.

Heres a question: Why even bother rebuilding your engine when it needs it? This is a very expensive way to go and only worth it if the car is pristine, or a collector car, etc. There are many, many rusted out MB's with fairly low mileage engines that can be bought cheap. Often you can get a complete running parts car for less than the cost of new pistons. Used engines turn up here in the classifieds periodically too. If you really want to "prepare" for the inevitable why not wait for a good deal, purchase a nice used engine, pickle it and squirrel it away? Just my 2 cents. RT

It's just a hypothetical question, just wondering, the engine has to come out to repair rust in the engine compartment, so I thought why not....
