I think it's 7.9 by the book, but in practice it's between 7 and 7.5 to get it halfway between the marks.

When you change your oil

How about this: Just fill it with 6qts and top up from there.

On a cold '79 300 SD, between the marks is on the top mark when warm.

this is puzzling because it looks so much like the correct look. but it must be from splashing.

did you get together on that wagon?

I suspect the seal at the top of the dipstick leaks a little air and the crankcase pressure raises the level inside the dipstick tube while the engine is running. Mine always reads a little high too.

craig, i am floored by your analysis. it seems very good and right on.

also though i wonder if the level in the tube will then go down when the motor is shut off, and if the level goes down will the reading on the tube go down too or if the oil will cling to the dipstick as if it were immersed immediately before the checking. it looks very convincing. each time it happens i am astounded that it could look so correct for a high level and then be down the second check.

I'm just guessing Tom, maybe the dipstick seals well enough to hold the level in the tube even after the engine is shut off? I does look like it's actually reading that level, even after it's been sitting overnight. Maybe someone else has a better guess.
