Finished painting my 85 300D, but I need your opinion about Color again

Under fluorescent light the color looks like you wouldn't even want it on your toolbox. However under normal lighting, the color comes out okay. I seriously wish I had stuck with Dark Blue but I made a last minute "gut choice" color change for something less serious----I didn't want my car looking like a hearse or an embassy Mercedes....now I wonder if I will have to live with this for some time--thats because the engine and trans on this car are all good, it goes into daily driving very soon....

(please excuse the doors in my kitchen, but I actually did that for safety reasons, you need to have plenty of space to fit the car in there and besides everyone was on vacation.PS I put those hardwood floors in myself Suginami, so if I hear anymore Purple Door jokes............)

How does the color look outside? Thats where it counts, in the sun in may fill out nicely.

Carrameow - You must have the most understanding wife on this planet. My other half would see no sense of humor with the kitchen scene.

I just said "Honey, I didnt get you the new car you wanted, but i did get you these new doors.." Actually as I said, everyone was on a vacation or trip, I was alone for a week. Those doors are gone and the House is spotless today..

TX76513 09-28-2006 02:18 PM

I would not be that lucky. Somehow she would see the picture on the internet and call me:P

Working with colors is an art form to say the least. Proper perception for the average person like myself would have to wait until the car is back together with all chrome on etc. It will probably be allright as seeing a panel here and there can be far from a true indication. How did the paint flow out for you and much orange peel? Your two photographs illistrate directly the difference in lighting. The doors appear to me a much darker blue under non floresent lighting. Yet the exposures look fairly consistant. Its a kelvin color temperature kind of thing. To actually visulise the paint inside you would have to borrow a corrective photographic filter or carry one panel outside and look at it.

good job

i would say, as long as the craftmanship is there, i am sure it would look very good no matter part of the visual spectrum the paint reflectes.

The color looks darker in the picture where they
are in the kitchen.
So it might not be to bad.
It's kinda hard to tell without them being on the
car and in daylight.

Looks nice to me thought.
Looks like you did a nice job.

Louis.

What's the name of that particular color? Is it a factory color? I've been starting to get interested in blues lately for some reason. There's a late model Porshe I see everyday sitting in a used car forecourt with a similar color. Well, I can dream can't I?

suginami 09-28-2006 08:37 PM

What, where's the lavender bedroom door? :P

All kidding aside, I don't think any of us can tell what color your car looks like without actually seeing it in person.

Your paint color will look different in different kinds of lighting. Flourescent lighting has to be the worst for representing true color.

I'm not a fan of the color your chose, but that's my personal preference. I prefer the darker colors, like dark blue and burgundy.

However, if you like it, that's all that matters. :)

There you go. You should've trusted your initial decision.

Well, look on the bright side. You certainly learned how to paint better by applying this color.

You can live with this jelly bean blue color for a year or two, then repaint it in the dark blue that it deserves.

(I'm partial to the dark blue myself.);) Oh wait, that's the color of mine.

I'm tempted to start repainting it already....

I'm tempted to start repainting it already....but I am just too tired. Anyway in winter, its always dark and noone will notice, so come March, I will repaint her..I already hate the color and thats the truth..I have no heart to reassemble the car or take the masking paper and tape off...maybe I will just leave it on over the winter until i repaint her!!

LarryBible 09-29-2006 09:23 AM

Carrameow,

As always, you have tackled a job and whipped it. Congrats!

Color is a very personal thing and the only person that has to be satisfied is yourself, and of course if you're married, her.

catmandoo62 09-29-2006 09:38 AM

don't leave the masking tape on or you will have a bigger mess then you ever dreamed of.it will dry out and the adhesive will come off the tape and it's just hell to get off.i'm pulling all my paper and tape within about an hour of painting, just long enough for the clear to harden and off it comes.

Carrameow 09-29-2006 09:39 AM

Thanks Mr. Bible........

One thing that is cool is that this all started with welding...first I did some floorboards, but pretty soon I got so good at it, i was welding patch panels to repair my rockers, fenders, you name it..thats when I got the idea to Paint it............

vstech 09-29-2006 09:40 AM

it ain't gonna be any fun removing the tape in a few weeks!

seriously, the tape will harden and be difficult to remove... unless you used the 3m Green masking tape. it is much more forgiving. if you are planning to just re shoot it, you may want to start now. if you are going to wait, pull the mask off now and re mask it again then. good luck.
that first picture scared me. hard to imaging a neon blue mb driving down the road. I have seen neon orange though. yucK!

ahhh, Life is a mystery

when my first Mercedes siezed an engine back in 1995, I joined this Forum and got the idea to rebuild it..setbacks lead to better things...

well now I got a Dud paintjob, and I have to redo it...sooner or later. Sooner would be better than later..........

rs899 09-29-2006 09:52 AM

My poor wife drove around with Viper Red (way too orange) and no trim on her 300D waiting for it to cure (acrylic enamel) enough to respray with something closer to Signalrot.

Moral of these stories is shoot a whole panel and THINK about it before you shoot the whole car. That is, if aren't using a factory color, or haven't ever seen your exact car in that exact color before.

Ha ha, guess who gave me the idea to not use Dark Blue

Ha ha, guess who gave me the idea to not use Dark Blue. Some character looked at the Color chart:) :) :) and said it looked like Black. Same guy mentioned Mack Blue to me.... I had the can in my HANDS and returned it. I just didnt have a week to wait for new paint when I shot it! Because I already scheduled vacation.:laugh3: :laugh3: :laugh3:

If it's any consolation, I like it. That's the general color I'd like to go for someday.

Have you seen your color outside yet? It will look different in natural light. "Don't hate it, until you've tried it"

I know what you're going through, though. I'm trying to paint my rims, and I messed them up the first time. Now I'm repainting.
