stop lever valve

Hi guys,
Searched the previous threads and I believe I have found my problem, but would like for someone to confirm before I order part. I have a 1987 300 sdl. When I switch it off it continues to run. Pressing the stop lever shuts it right down. I checked the vacumn on the line going to the shut off valve and get 24". It had dropped to 19" after about an hour. Checked the vacumn on the stop lever valve and it will not hold vacumn. Therefore, I should replace the stop lever valve, correct? All of the pictures I saw were for different model cars. On the 300 sdl the valve is on top of the injector pump, correct? Read about runaway diesels. When doing the installation of the stop lever valve on the 300 sdl, is it the same procedure for getting the lever on the valve in the correct place to avoid diesel runaway? Thanks in advance.

I highly recommend that you test the engagement of the new shutoff valve BEFORE starting the engine! After you install it, apply vacuum and make sure the stop lever moves downward.

If you screw it up you'll end up with a very angry run-away engine that will take itself apart very quickly. Have a block of wood handy to block the intake pipe.

If you perform the testing procedure I mentioned and see the stop lever move, you'll be OK. This applies ONLY to the OM60x injection pumps - you can physically see the stop lever move when vacuum is applied to the shutoff valve. I don't believe this is true with the older motors.
