Can I swap this engine into the 240D?

Any comments on this eBay car?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Mercedes-Benz-300-Series-1980-Mercedes-Benz-300D-4-speed-manual-Euro-5-cylinder_W0QQitemZ140037327949QQihZ004QQcategoryZ6330QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Is this engine compatible with my 79 240D (has same manual transmission also)?

Might be kinda of a kick to have a slightly more powerful engine....

The heck with the car, look at that garage!!!!

**edit**
BTW, anybody that would remove parts from that car to put in another should have to sell their MB's and drive only French made cars. And, that car will end up going for way too much $ to consider that.........

Why would you want to tear up a beautiful car like that? Yes, it will swap over, but you should not waste such a good looking car JUST for the engine and tranny.

I hear ya, so I guess it just depends on the final price. The BIG unknown here is the mileage on the engine....

BTW, would I need to add anything to the diesel if I were to drive this in cold weather to CO and KS to visit some friends and relatives? (If I won this, I would fly into vegas and go to Denver, then KS...)

A few minor repairs, a new dash, and it would be a nice little cherry.

Jimmy,

There was a thread I started a while back on my big dilemma to either junk my dad's 240D or restore it....the overwhelming response was to fix it...so now I'm looking for the engine.

The engine is probably the least valuable part of that car with (estimated) 350K. It is a pretty clean euro and should be saved. I expect it will sell for around $2-3000 because it will still need another couple of $1000 to make it right (not counting any potential engine problems).

You need to look for a good 150-200K engine in a car with a bad body for your 240D, unless you want to spring for a reman engine.

I want that "hydraulic manual transmission!" Oh wait, I have one -- just move the lever L-S-D instead of letting the tranny do it!

I'd like to buy it just for that euro injection pump (and send it to Myna Diesel ).

Yeah, I guess I keep shopping...got it on my watch list, though, cause I might still bid on it, and I'd be curious as to its final selling price....

I'm sorry if I stated my point poorly. I was speaking more to the value of that Euro, and not implying that you shouldn't restore the 240D.
A month or so ago there were all kinds of 240 engine donors around here for $500 bucks and under. One ended up in my back pasture, a couple sold, and I believe one remains. Engines are out there, just bide your time....

If you are going to go to the trouble of swapping in a 5 cyl engine you may as well go turbo.

Darn, too late! Oh well, I just found out I'll be making a trip to the mainland soon, so I thought I'd start a serious search. I guess I could always continue looking once I got there too, but I started thinking, maybe I could save on some rental car expense if I found just the right one at the right time...

I have a 1979 240D engine block and head (head has had former repair work) engine needs to be rebuilt but it is free and in Santa Monica if you're headed for LA. I might add that it has the loop glowplugs but an R4 compressor.....79 is a switch year for York/R4 AC compressors.
