When I was in Algeria I had a Peugeot 304 (not a diesel, unfortunately). We ex-patriate workers at the SONELEC plant used a "rural road" to bypass town on our way back to the foreigners housing compound (downtown Sid-bel-Abbes was a zoo). The road was something like the track in the video. It was fun and, since the Peugeot was owned by GTE, not me personally, I didn't have to worry about the risks (as long as I didn't run over someone's goat). It was surprising how well the little Peugeot did, I never got stuck or had any mechanical problems.

i crossed 30 miles of desert in Arizona once... with a Geo Storm.

I had just to change the air and oil filter and do an oil change after that. I had silt even in my underwear. But that experience taught me than 4x4 are way overrated, and SUV even more.!!!

A few months later that experience i drove to Mount Lemon with a friend in Caravan (she was driving a dodge Durango 4x4; i was following her in the Storm). Well she got stuck in a mud pit and the lowly Strom save the day... So much for SUV!!!!

My point is that normal cars will do fair work if given the chance.

I also have a funny story with the 240D. I manage to cross, a wash (again in Tucson) 2 ft deep where a F250 Gasser was stuck (don't get those park plugs get wet sucker!!! ).

I had a rear wheel nissan 200sx that ran circles around SUVs and 4 wheels back in the blizzard of 94. Of course I had chains which is a bit rare south of mason dixon but it was really amusing to putter past all those stalled/stuck cars.

Kind of lame after a while, but probably fun to slide around. Did MB ever rally the W123's?

Talking

Frankly I was quite impressed by that video, and pleased that they were actually trying to accomplish something, and not deliberately ram it into trees and such. it looked like they're doing time trials for something.
but it's cool to see what kinda crap you can throw at a mercedes and still get thru...
