I agree, very impressive mileage. Best I've ever managed was 30.4mpg @ a steady 55mph. That wasn't on ULSD though, and I have a huge 300SD 5cyl, not a 240.

Figuring mileage on only a half tank of fuel pretty much tells you nothing. If you stay at 35mpg over several tanks, then you can believe.

how do u figure? i usually get 33 on the highway. plus i filled the tank completley to the top, drove 210 miles then filled up when i got into town. with the gallons and miles i went, the math read 34.8 or rounded would be 35. dont see how several tanks would make a difference b/c how could it differ so gratley if i did one tank or 300 tanks

The more "sample" data you get, the more the impact of outliers is reduced, that's all. There are so many variables that can influence calculations that can easily give you off-whack numbers ... but if you get the same number over and over and over, you can get closer to being able to say that's your actual mileage. Some fuel pumps click off at different levels than others, or foam more, so it may not be filled exactly to the same level as before. Of course, it can be hard to get a lot of samples to average, because if you're anything like me, your driving conditions probably are different with each tank of fuel. If you usually get 33, it's not unreasonable to assume your 35 is accurate. But if you get the same number three more times under similar conditions, you've got a much stronger case. In most statistical applications, the bigger your sample, the more accurate your ultimate figure.

I used a tank in my Jeep a month ago, and it's my only example so far. It was the worst mileage I've gotten on a tank in the car so far. However, it was probably the most choppy, around-town, stop and go tank of driving I've ever put together, too. So I'll have to wait and see how it does next time I use that station ... rarely go there because it's out of my way and expensive. None of my regular stations seem to have it yet, or at least it isn't marked as such.

... how errors are generated in using math everyday is one of my passions... and I would speculate that you could repeat the exact same test run multiple times and you would obtain widely different results each time. I agree with another POST when the author said you need to burn 2 or 3 tanks... that is before you should allow yourself to feel too smug... and the most accurate way would be for you to travel a regular route where you are backtracking... this way you would average out any uphill / downhill travel impact .

By all means please keep tracking your fuel / miles driven and then total them up over several tank-fulls... and then see what your mileage comes out to be. I will monitor this THREAD and look forward to your future POSTs on this THREAD.

Sam

There's also the tire size, and odometer/trip meter accuracy which varies a lot since most of us don't have or run the original spec tires. I have never seen a 185 or a 175 mm tire!

Wow. Your odometer must really be slipping.

Just messin around... that's damned good mileage for a big car shaped like a brick. Do you have a 5 speed?

nobody is suggesting that you are being untruthful. but that is about 15% higher than most of us has ever gotten so we look for an error in the mix. if i got that good of mileage, i would be checking tire diameter and odo accuracy against the mile markers, etc.

and if that all checks out then the answer is you must have a pump that is adjusted optimally and a sweet running motor.

cheers.

You're also most likely to have more significant deviation errors when you check after burning just a few gallons...because of the inconsistencies in filling up, or calling it "full".

In other words, "full" could be 6.3 gallons or 6.0 gallons because in reality, if you are within a quart or so of full it will look full, but maybe it took that extra quart last time and this time you stopped a quart or so short. So, the "error" represent 5% of the fuel you think you used.

In my example if you had gone 200 miles you would have gotten either 33.3 or 31.7 MPG, or a 5% difference. However, that same .3 gallons on a full tank of say 15 gallons only represents 2% so the difference is only about .5 MPG. That's why it's best to average over several full tanks to both minimize the error from "fullness" and also average out that error over several samples.
