Odd turn signal behavior 124

I have lived with this problem for almost 2 years but now I have to fix it (we moved to Texas where they still have vehicle inspections). On my 87 300D, the turn signals work fine when the headlights are off. When I turn them on, the right front (passenger) turn signal stays on (not blinking...just steady on). The right turn indicator on the dash is also illuminated (steady on). When I move the turn signal arm to indicate a right turn, no blinking and no clicking. When I move the turn signal arm to indicate a left turn, the left turn signal blinks and relay clicks as it should.
What is going on here?

Thanks,
Clint

blowing number 3

are oyu constantly blowing the number 3 fuse (headlamp washer system, illumination, parking lights, liscence plate light)? if i recall correctly, when i had my problem (id always blow number 3 when i turned the lights on to the first position) my turn signal on the side that was 'out' would not blink, same as you. turns out i had insulation wear off two wires that shorted-out the circuit when i turned the lights on. my short was located along the wires that follow the left side trunk hinge and feed the power to the liscenceplate light. hope this helps.

Clint,
Did you ever find the problem? I have a 1993 300D that just started doing the exact same thing.
Thanks, Jerry

The interference issue may have more to do with the "parking" lights than the headlights, because the front turn signal bulb is a dual filament bulb. So the same issue probably occurs when you have just the parking lights on.

I had a strange behavior problem with turn signals that ended up being a blown bulb. However, the bulb blew in a strange way. The upper filament burned out at one side, and that side dropped down and touched the lower filament, welding itself in place. So I had a kind of short circuit WITHIN the bulb. All kinds of strange things took place, like alternator failure indications (idiot light), strange turn signal behavior, and such. Parking lights would still work, turn signals work work sort of, but the current path was not that intended by the people who designed the control and monitoring circuits.

So, the very easiest thing to start off with in checking a front turn signal problem is to change out the bulb as a test.

Repeat after me: It's always the grounds, it's always the grounds, it's always the grounds.

Check the ground responsible for the light that is malfunctioning. When a light malfunctions and affects other lights, it is cross-powering the other light through an open ground.

If the light hasn't been re-wired incorrectly after an accident or something.

The other possibility if it is a dual-filament bulb is that someone forced it in the socket the wrong way, put in a single-filament bulb when dual-filament was required, or turned the bulb too far in the socket.

Check the simple first.

I had a similar problem with my '86 300D and yes it was a ground problem. I found mine easily. It was in the trunk by the tail-light wiring. It was simply a loose nut.

Just got mine (1993 300D) fixed today. It turned out that there was a short between the wire for the parking light and the wire for the turn signal somewhere in the wiring harness for the right front lamp. It was backfeeding to the indicator lamp inside on the dash. I checked the grounds front and back and they were fine. The way this car is wired, you can isolate each corner by pulling the largest black box in the relay area behind the fuse panel under the hood. The large box is the brains of a system that will let you know if an exterior bulb is out anywhere. Once the box is pulled you can check across the terminals at the bulb sockets to see if there is continuity. If there is you have a short. I found a short at the right front socket, so I cut the #7 wire from the plug towards the front of the large box (goes to right front socket for parking light filament). Then I cut the same wire at that socket ( red & gray I think). I checked my turn signals then and they worked fine. I still needed to run a new wire from terminal #7 to the socket so my parking light would work again. I soldered one in and everything works like it's supposed to. Hope this helps somebody. Jerry
