1985 300td... must the rad. be removed to change waterpump??

Can anyone tell me if it is absolutely a must to remove the radiator to get the fan and then replace the water pump? It seems like I might be able to get in there and remove the fan first then loosen and remove the belts and then the water pump....????

I'd appreciate your comments...

Thanks

Manny

You can definitely remove the water pump with the radiator installed.

Get some cardboard and tape it to the inside of the radiator to save your knuckles.

Also, you'll need a 10mm box wrench that's modified on the nose to make it a bit thinner. Don't try and remove the four screws that hold the fan in place with an open end wrench. You'll just put yourself in a world of hurt when they round off.

actually the fan shroud can be a larger pain than you might imagine. And heed the advise about modifying the correct box wrench. Ask me how I know......

Why not just remove it too? It does not take long to do and it will save you frustration. You will be loosing a lot of coolant when you change out the pump, why not drain the radiator too, flush and fill up with new Zerex?

Transmission lines are a PITA. Usually, trans fluid goes everywhere.

Perfect time to replace them, mine were VERY hard and crusty. Accident waiting to happen there.

Remove the radiator! You will save knuckles and it's not hard to do! Remove the bracket and bolt holding the oil cooler to the radiator and remove the trans fluid cooling lines from the bottom of your radiator and lift it out! A pair of golf tees comes in handy for plugging up the transoil cooler lines! It will also save you from cleaning up a big mess! Good Luck!!!!

no disconnection necessary.
Doesn't help you with the tranny lines, though........
