Angry Forgot to replace oil cap on valve cover

I did my first oil change today and just drove 25 miles to my destination and pooped the hood and realized that I forgot to put the oil cap back on the engine block. There is oil all over. I did the number one mistake and that was get in a hurry. I drained the oil out over night, added 7 quarts this morning, tightened everything down. Let it sit for about 15 mins. Started her up, checked for leaks and went on my way. Does this increase my chances of having diesel run-away since oil is sprayed all over the engine. I know this increases my chances for the dumb-a$$ award but any technical info will be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Ben

All you did was make a mess. Some soap and a pressure washer can correct it.

i did this about 30 years ago with my first benz here in america. i may have done it again but the first time is the most memorable....kindof like sex.

i can top that. i once forgot to put the drain plug in and ran about four quarts down on the ground before i noticed it running out by my feet!

It's funny, because whenever I have the oil cap off of my car, I will almost always start driving down the road and start wondering if I put it back on, and will pull over to pop the hood and check. There have been a couple times that I did forget, and amazingly the cap was still sitting right on the valve cover, despite the shaking of the engine and movement from driving down the road! I really must have short term memory loss In fact just a couple of weeks ago, I had added a little tranny fluid, and 2 days later I got to thinking that I might not have put the dipstick back in, so I popped the hood, and right there laying across my engine was the darned dipstick!
