Intake Manifold Cleaning
 

I'm thinking of taking my intake manifold off to clean the crud out of it, theres so much of it in there I'm worried about it going into my engine. Disabled the EGR a few days after getting the car, but there was already a lot in there. How much does the manifold gasket cost? And how difficult is it to remove the turbo to remove the manifold? Anything else I should do while I'm in there?

You know, I've been wondering this myself in preparation for getting my engine put back together. I remember on Brandon's intercooler thread he just used an oxy-acetaline torch to burn it all out. I mentioned that to my dad, who has an oxy torch, and he seemed to think that there were much better ways to do that. Maybe a radiator shop and have them hot-tank it? Anyone?

I'm just thinking of using my 3000psi pressure washer and blasting it, even if the water has to bounce around to reach some places, it should still be pretty powerful.

Using an oxyacetylene torch is not a very good idea. It can melt a hole in the manifold lickedy split if you hang in one spot too long.

Just use a few cans of brake/carb cleaner.

That's what I was thinking but I saw the pictures so it made me wonder.

An auto parts store that does hot tanking will do a manifold for about $20.

Mine was so gunked up even after 24 hours in the hot tank there was still soft crud inside the passages. I finished cleaning it with lots of brake cleaner and a baby bottle brush and a BIG pile of rags.

(Don't forget to buy a new bottle brush for the baby.)

I used a kind of screw driver first. Second thing was adapting the bore diameters to those of the gasket with an air tool (milling device).
On top I did the same with the intakes into the head (closed the area towards the valves with paper and grease). Now it is like one single tube.
Finally into B100 for a day or so and a high pressure water wash.

yep, if your gonna go that far, may as well tap it for a boost gauge,and match the ports up, too. and pull the exaust, port it and tap it for egt probe:D

I read a report from someone that they took their intake manifold to a self-service car wash. A couple of bucks, set it in the sun to dry and reinstalled. Sounds like the best way to go to me.;)

Just dunk the manifold in Kerosene. Works like a charm the crap will come right out with the help of a stiff brush.

there was a post in here from somebody who soaked their manifold in bio diesel which makes sense. Bio diesel is a powerful solvent, try it and report back, thanks

i went to the dollar store and got some dishwashing gloves, a roasting pan and some of that stainless 'steel wool' without the soap in it. i siphoned some diesel from the tank and made myself a homemade parts washer that put a shine on my intake!

soaking works well, when i finished i cleaned it with dawn foamy and a garden hose.

Soak it with soap and toss it in the dishwasher (Don't let the wife find out. :D )

Other than the manifold gasket, do I need to get anything else? EGR gasket? (perfect time ti replace it wth some sheet metal too) Turbo gaskets?
