124 VERY late shifting
On my drive home on Friday in my 87 300D all was going well until an odd thing happened. I sped up after the traffic cleared but the car would not shift out of 2nd. After finally reving up beyond 3000 rpm it made the shift HARD, dropped to 2000 rpm and shifted to 4th, again pretty hard. This very late shifting occured a few more times in my drive but as I approached home, the shifting went back to normal. I used to have very hard 1-2 shifts but after replacing some vacuum connections last year, that settled down. I have searched the archives and found similar behavior due to clogged fuel filters and fuel starvation. The engine would increase rpm just fine but would not shift. I checked it out Sunday morning and had the same behavior one time. After about 5 miles, things settled down again. What is going on here? Another question for clarification, how can the problem be clogged fuel filters when the rpm rises fast but just no shifting?

When was the last time you changed the tranny fluid & filter? Clogged filters shouldn't cause this, but it can affect shifting because the shift point & firmness are controlled almost entirely by throttle position. So if your foot is farther down than normal and power is less than normal, you'll get a late+hard shift. This is also why proper ALDA adjustment can simultaneously improve shifting. Wouldn't hurt to check for broken vacuum lines and make sure the Bowden cable to the tranny is not sticking.

transmission shifting vacuum problem?
i agree with a vacuum problem, initially i would check here. see if the vacuum supply is interrupted.
look and trace the line comming out of the vacuum pod that is over the front driverside fender. the vacuum line that controls the tranny shift comes out of this pod, goes through a green plastic delay/check valve then to the transmission. see if a vacuum connection has come unplugged. i had work done on my car one time and drove it away and it banged into all of its shifts, tuns out one of the vacuum lines got bumped and dislodged during the work.

I checked the vacuum lines and all are fine. My main concern was the loooooooooooooong delayed shift from 2-3. I will look at the vacuum lines again and use my mityvac to verify the values.
BAsed upon searches and replies I believe that the delayed shift is caused by the bowden cable and/or a k1 spring. Do these sound like the culprit for the long shift (although the 2-3 delayed shift appears to be less frequent among other 124 users). Thanks all, Clint
