Importing a Mercedes into the US?

http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/rules/import/web_RI_list01122006.html

The nhtsa has a lot of interesting stuff. I sent an email to one of the shops, lets see if I get any response.

If it can be done in a reasonable manner I would love to buy an S300TD next fall. I am holding out hope because the W140 was sold in this country, so it shouldn't be to hard to import one.

Lets see if it can be done for $20k-$25k at my door. Figure I'll have to find an S300TD for $15k-$20k US and the rest to get it legal in this country.

I saw one of these (gray market W140 Diesel) about 3 years ago that had been released to a Registered Importer (www.richmondmercedes.com) from the docks in Los Angeles and brought to Northern California for conversion to US specs and sale.

I don't know if the conversion had been completed at that point, but the car had been bought used in Italy, still had Italian newspapers and some Italian plastic water bottles in the trunk, the car had the cloth upholstery you never see in the American S class cars. A very impressive looking car.

The best way to import is still to contract with an experienced registered importer, though, there are too many traps for the unwary if you try to do it yourself, it's not worth the risk to find yourself in a position to be unable to complete the conversion process and find the car must be exported or destroyed. A mis step in the process by an amateur could prove ruinous. (MBUSA has stated that some 1993+ euro models have airbags that do not conform to US standards)
