Hi! First Post!!
I have a 1984 300D Turbo that came with a 1978 617-950 (SD) engine. Unfortunately the "transplant" was poorly done in that they used the air cleaner housing from the 1984. As a result I do not have blow-by return into the oil sump, and oil everywhere! Is it safe to modify the turbo intake tube to take the blow-by products directly from the rocker cover?? (As they used to do in the 1978 SDs??) Will the resulting oil vapours at the turbo input turbine cause any problems?? Thanks. |

Does the '84 air filter housing have the cyclonic oil separator in the housing? It's entire purpose is to seperate the oil from the "blowby", and return it to the oil pan via a second oil return line.
On my '79 300SD with the 617.95 engine, I only have one oil return line, that being the one from the turbo. I do not have the cyclonic oil separator in the housing, and I would think if you find an air cleaner housing from a W116, it would be easier than to try to route that oil back to the oil pan. NO cyclonic separator, NO oil problem. |

My car has the breather tube coming from the valve cover, down to just in front of the turbo. My father's '85 300D turbo has this same hose going to the top of his air cleaner. Since your car has the "SD" version of the 617 engine, I would second 79 Super Turtle's suggestion and find a W116 air cleaner housing.

Just Curious
Have any of you with the w116 turbodiesels had a look at you turbine bades to see if there is any pitting on them? I always thought that if oil vapor molecules are hitting the blades as the turbo spins at outrageous rpm's the blades would eventually get damaged. Someone please take a look and see, I would like to know.

I replaced my turbo, because it was leaking oil, and burning it big time. It changed my life. So I can't check, sorry.

Now I don't know if it's normal or not, hopefully it's normal, but when ever I have pulled off the air cleaner assy. there is a small amount of oil sitting in the opening to the turbo. I'll have to look more closely to see if there is any pitting.

Mine has always had oil in there whenever I remove the U-tube. I guess that by the time the vapor reaches the turbo area, its cooled to a point that its liquid and just accumulates.
