Mystery bolt, leaks oil.

One of my pals has a w123 240d that is leaking oil. Yeah, imagine that , but the majority of the oil is coming out of a bolt that goes down into the engine near where the IP mates with the block. I've never noticed this on any of my mercedes, so I have no clue as to what it is. Does any one have any info on this?

The Bolt or The Crankase vent on Valve cover??

Howdy,

Are you sure that the oil is originating at that bolt??? It looks as if the oil is running down the Valve Cover (assume it's coming from the li'l Vent fitting that goes to Air Cleaner)....down around the forward injector.....along the valve cover gasket.....and perhaps making it's way down to that bolt????

mystery bolt

Yeah I know that it is coming from the bolt becuase when the engine is on, and at idle, you can very clearly see the bolt or the shaft that it is screwed to is bouncing up and down and spiting out oil. I took the bolt out and the bottom of the chamber there is a allen screw.

Mine car has the same puddle there. Someone here a long time ago described that bolt as a oil pump inspection bolt. How that can be I have no idea. Only advice is to not tighten it. I tried to tighten mine to try to stop leak and now bolt is unremovable. The space around the bolt just fills with oil but never really leaks down engine. I was thinking about maybe trying to tap a freeze plug or something similar over the bolt.

Under that "threaded cap" is the top of the oil pump shaft and intermediat gears. If its leaking you should be able to unscrew it and re seal it. Put a socket on it and some torque

It's definitely the top of the oil pump shaft...

... and in my official MBZ "Catalog" of parts blow-up diagrams I can see there are two "washer-like" rings that go under the cap-Nut you show in your photo... and one or both of these might very well serve to seal the top of the oil pump shaft... so IF/AFTER you verify the oil is in fact coming up and out from around this cap-nut, I would treat this one as a dealer only part!
Regards,
