Can rear wheel bearings be repacked/tightened?

I've been trying to track down what's wrong with my parking breaks on the rear wheels, but now I suspect them to be a symptom of a wheel bearing problem.

Briefly, the parking breaks rub a little every time the wheel makes a rotation. I thought a parking break problem (like weak return springs), but everything seems to be in working order in there. I'm not getting a squealing failed-bearing noise, but a gentle shussh-shussh from the parking break shoes sometimes when I drive the car, but then I noticed what I think is the clincher.. the noise is worse around right turns/bends than left ones.

So I've got two questions..
Q1: am I missing something that I should check before assuming the rear wheel bearings are the problem?

Q2: how difficult is it to repack the rear wheel bearings? If repacking isn't all that's needed I'll take it in someplace, but I'd like to know for sure the expense is necessary before doing that.

thanks,
patbob

Ok, not a DIY project

Thanks. I searched around the forum and found exactly none of those threads. Looks like even repacking those bearings is way beyond what I'm capable of.

Any ideas on the other question? Does it sound like I have the right diagnosis?

thanks,
patbob

Yes

it is very possible you have a bad rear bearing.

Take it to a good local MB technician for diagnosis and repair.
