Oil Line removal Help on 82 300 Sd

Hello all, was able to remove my oil line fittings easily at the oil cooler, but the line fittings at the oil filter housing are a different story. The fitting (at the oil filter housing) that the oil line fitting screws into wants to turn and it looks like it needs a thin profile wrench to hold it steady while I torque the oil line fitting. Does anyone know what size fitting this is so that I can either find a thin profile wrench to fit it or grind one down? Thanks, much appreciated!

Note: the oil cooler side fitting is 22 mm, but this fitting must be 23 or 24mm . . . nothings easy sometimes . . .

I ground down a 24 mm wrench to provide counter torque. It took a considerable amount of grinding too - that space is pretty narrow.

The bolt on the fittings on the oil cooler are 27mm, I had to go out and buy a huge $21 wrench just for the job. (though it was finally used for a second time this past week, to loosen the ALDA nut )

Anywho, I got it off, stripped all the threads on the bottom of the cooler, became unhappy, top threads were perfect still, heaved the cooler into my oil collection tub, was unhappy some more, removed the rest of the lines, installed new lines(took FOREVER, and I used the $212 OEM Set), new motor mounts, got all that all set, left the capped new ends hanging at the front of the car, left it on jack stands for a week waiting for a new Behr oil cooler I got on ebay for $310. It arrived, I mounted it, attached lines, added a qt of oil to the engine, and it was all set.

Cost: 27mm wrench $21, set of heavy duty allen keys $17, OEM Oil cooler lines $214, New Oil cooler $310, Motor Mounts $44, Entire can of PB blaster $4, oil $5

Total: ~$642
Not having to ever do it again (to this particular car) Priceless
Labor that I would have been charged at dealer for that whole job: $650
So I saved a bundle all the same, as it could have been just over $1000 at the dealer including parts.

Oh, and I was working on a cold cement floor of a One stall garage with bad insulation and only a couple electric heaters by me during early April in Michigan. Highs in the upper 30's. Wasn't the most pleasant experience, but I did it!!! This was over 1.5 years/ 30k ago.

I am happy to hear you used OEM lines, that will let you rest easy knowing they aren't gonna blow or something, like I have seen aftermarket lines with bad crimps and we sent them back (to the dealer!) Hoses are a critical part!

Just so we're clear, the nut on the oil cooler lines is 27mm. The fitting on the oil filter housing is 24mm (at least on my 82 SD). I think everyone in the thread knows this, I just don't want to confuse people reading who haven't done the job.

PawoSD, my oil cooler line experience was a lot like yours, minus the new oil filter housing and mounts. I spent forever on a cold cement floor in the middle of winter trying to get those criters. Among the least fun jobs I've done, but not having a fine oil sheen down the left side of the car made it all worthwhile

all you northerners working on cement in winter..

hey, if you have a water heater in your garage, or if you put a water heater in your garage, I can give you some easy plans for VERY comfortable heat on the floor under your car while you work.
email or PM me if you want it, no prob, if you are handy. and aint all us MB'ers handy?
now that I think of it, winter is comming fast, maybe I will make up a DIY and post it here...or in the DIY section. leave requests on this thread, if you guys are interested.

cold concrete!

I was searching this thread since we've got the oil cooler line replacements thing to do ASAP, and found your mention of the heated garage floor.

In the winter, EVERYONE'S concrete gets cold, even here in Texas! It's miserable enough being under your car when you'd rather be driving it, but cold and damp, too? Brrrrrr. So where're those plans? Bring 'em on!

I use what a Hobo interviewed on TV said he used when he had to sleep on Concrete. Layers of Card Board.

Ounce I also used his trick of stuffing Newspaper inside of your clothing to keep warm. It breaks the wind really well.

I took off on a Motorcycle during the day wearing only my Denim Levi Jacket for a coat.

On the return trip at 3 in the morning out in the Desert I was numbing cold.
I found a Gas Station (closed) that had a Coin News Paper Dispenser and bought one and lined my Torso and Arms under the Jacket with layers of Newspaper.

It was noisy when I moved but It felt way warmer that way then a cold 65+ mile an hour wind blowing through only Denim.
