Super Diesel Lube Oil Filter, 2 Guys Garage

Folks,

I was just watching "2 Guys garage" on SpeedTV.......it's a chilly rainy day here.....and they had this product to showcase....

www.fs2500.com/

....it's supposed to filter out 99% of the soot and crud in your lube oil.....looks good to me......I wrote them and asked specifically MB 300D's.
I will post any responce that I get from them, in this thread.

Am just wondering what y'all think about this???

SB

That's just like those TP filters, and they are supposed to work very well...

Short on science and fact.

I grade this on the exact same level as

If Mercedes filters are so bad that alternatives are needed, why did this 240D average 259,846 miles of hard TAXI driving per engine???

240D with 4.6 million kilometers on the clock

Shore,

MB Diesel engines already have a bypass filter built in to the standard oil filter. Another shouldn't be needed.

While I agree about the gimmicky nature, that taxi had like 11 engines and trannies or something like that so it's not exactly accurate to treat it as though it was one drivetrain that went all those miles.
Furthermore, the Frantz/Motor Guard TP oil filters are awesome. They will keep the soot out of the oil and keep it useable beyond current notions of useability. Trouble is what's the TBN of the oil after so long with one of these filters, and how to adapt to OM617? Those are the caveats.

If I were going to go to the trouble however I'd go with the Frantz or the Motor Guard and not that other one that I don't even know the name of because the website doesn't work. That smells like a gimmick to me.

I contacted the FS2500 people a few months back, concerning a setup for my '05 Jeep CRD. You're talking over $500 for one of these setups, not counting replacement filters. That would buy at least 3 years worth of oil changes in my case.

You know...just because the filter makes the oil look "clean" does not mean it is clean. All they are are fleece or paper mechanical filters that remove particulate matter like soot and metal shavings.
A lot of chemical and fuel contaminates build up in oil over time that automotive filters do not touch. The only way to remove the chemical contaminants is to change the oil frequently.

check this thread
http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=151448&highlight=gcf

and do a google/shop forum search on Gulf coat filters.

People have repeatedly said 616/617 engine have a "bypass filter" already, but this in not true- they have a bypass feature. The bypass feature of the stock filter does not filter to the 1-4 microns that bypass filters do. Others have also said that there is no need for this as the engines run to 400K with normal oil changes. That's great, but further filtration of any fluid on a engine is a positive- you have to decide the positives/neg's aspects the costs/time/maint/lost space/unknown or "unproven" benefits and make up your own mind. I installed a GCF on my now sold 1980 300 TD and twice had the oil sent in for analysis (after many more miles than the oft quoted 3K change it logic) and it came back very close to being "straight out of the container". That is science- NOT a gimmick.

It had three engines, rebuilt a total of eleven times.
This does not show how many thousands of hours the engines where idling.

I have seen the 240D used as a Taxi in the USA, you are lucky if the engine survives 120,000 - 180,000 miles total, before a driver wrecks it, generally over filling the oil = run away.

In the next week, I'm going to install an Amsoil EaBP90 bypass filter.

The cr@ppy MB cotton gin waste by-pass "filter" does not filter remotely as efficiently as the "toilet paper" type filter can. Coupled with Delvac 1 synthetic oil, I hope to keep the oil as clean as possible.
