little id help if possible.

After tracking vacuum issues today,I beleive that the pump may be the problem,as per this site I went looking for repair kit forthe pump and I find that there are two types. Not sure which one I have. How do I tell the difference?this is for an 84 300D turbo.thanks

No diaphragm?

That's what I'm looking at too, for my '85 300D. I'm a little confused by that photo of the kit though. It doesn't appear to contain anything that looks like a diaphragm, does it?

IIRC those two things in the lower left are diaphragms. It doesn't have a big sheet of rubber like door locks and AC actuators have for a diaphragm. The vacuum pump does thousands of strokes per minute (driven by the IP timer so half crank speed). A big floppy diaphragm won't keep up.

One item that isn't in the kits (and not generally available form the autoparts places) is the bearing at the end of the actuator arm in the vac pump. Check yours to see that it isn't binding or (worse) loose about the shaft. When the bearings fail they dump the bb's into the oil supply and that can jam the timing chain and the result is a lot of damage when things go crunch!
I had a rebuilt vac pump from somewhere that someone had rebuilt and dabbed yellow paint on the cover bolts to indicate it had been rebuilt, but the bearing would not spin freely, it was binding up. Needless to say it went into the junk can.
