Engine mounts, gas vs diesel

Are the mounting locations on the 126 chassis different on gas vs the diesel cars? I am wondering if a 617 will bolt into a 420 chassis?
The effort involved will be bad enough. If I have to make special mounts I wont even consider doing this.

Yep.
I can't seem to find a decent 300SD and there appears to be no resale value of a clean 420SEL so what the heck...
I need to check and see how much heavier the SEL is than a SD. It may be a slug with the taller diff ratio and added weight.
Just thinking at this stage.

Clue me in, why are the 420's so worthless? I know the 380 has a better engine and the 560 is the muscle car....

You may have a problem doing that swap if you live where smog testing is required.

don't forget about glow plug circuits,vacuum...

Whiskeydan,
The bodies are the same - you can probably just replace the engine mounts with proper diesel mounts and get away with it...BUT, you still have to set up the glow plug relays, vacuum controls and I'd make it a full engine/trans swap.

Good Luck - curious to see how it develops.

John

I realize the swap will be a major undertaking. Why would I consider this???

1) I have a clean 420SEL that has hi miles, transmission issues, tight suspension, nice interior, is the color combo I want...
2) I've tried to sell the SEL for sometime now. No takers, very few interested. Its taking up space.
3) I have a SD donor/parts car that is beyond restoration (for me). I would think most of the needed parts for the conversion are here.
4) The SEL has the axle ratio I desire in a 617 powered 126.
5) I'm craving a 617 powered 126 and I have not found anything for sale that doesn't need critical attention so, there would be work involved anyway.
6) I've done stranger things...

I am aware the vacuum system, heater hose routing, thottle linkage, exhaust, cooling system etc...would all require some engineering.
What I am not aware of is the length of driveshaft difference, eng/trans mount locations. I don't want to get into fabricating mounts.

It would be something I would drive as I would think it would have no resale value to anyone other than a MB diesel geek like myself.
There would be no issue with state inspections where I live. I've checked.

You'll probably want to swap the rear end. If you keep the one in the 420, it'll really be a slug but you'll have a nice low rpm's at highway speeds.

I've thought of this. If I put 50 series (smaller diameter) tires and start out in first I don't think it would be that bad.

Couldn't be any slower than the 1.6L na VW caddy I'm driving. 0-60 in 23 seconds but at close to 50 mpg I'm in no hurry.

I don't think there's much out there that's slower than the caddy. I guess you'll be fine.
