617 engines, 116 vs 126

What's the difference (if any) in a turbo 617 from a '79 SD 116 vs one from a '81-84 SD 126?

Wdan,

The 617 engines in the 126 models had more anti air pollution devices on them such as EGR. That's what all the vacuum stuff on the valve cover is for.

AFAIK, all the 617's have the same mounting points, even the non turbo's. some have A/C compressors in differant locations, and some have differant length alternator brackets and such, but the engines are all the same...except for the TD motor that has that pump for the wagon's suspension stufff.

Be careful here-

The mounting points on the engine are the same, but the alloy arms that bolt to the chassis are very likely different for all chassis.

The pre-1980 OM617.95 is rated at 110 Hp vs 120 or 123 for the later W126 and W123 variants. The earlier camshafts weren't as hard as the later ones and can wear.

The upper oil pan on the early engine that fits the W116 is smooth. On the W123 and W126 it has stiffening ribs. The later engine will not fit a W116 chassis without swapping (or grinding ) the ribs. This would be to clear the rear subframe bar that the W116 has. An early engine will fit the W123 or W126 chassis , but not the other way around, unless you address the oil pan.

The W116 300SD had less HP, the breather hose was set up a little differently than the W126 300SDs, there was no EGR on the W116 300SDs until 1980, which was the last year for that bodystyle.

Here is a Wikipedia link that has a little info on the 617.950 (w116) and 617.951 (w126) that you may want to look at.

what about oil filter configuration, and ac mounting points?

i think the early cars had the oil filter accessed from below and the (shudder) frankenstein ac bracket.

Not real sure about the AC. My 80 has an R4 at the bottom and I think even the 78s and 79 were the same. They all had the upright oil filter housing

Now this all has got me curious about exactly just what engine I stuffed into my 240, I only know it was supposedly from a newer car, that its a 5 cyl 617.?, the vac pump looks a little different in that it only had one port going to the booster instead of 2 ports (original had a second to air cleaner lid) and that the box of accy's and parts that came with the motor had a cylindrical shaped ac pump instead of the black round Delco unit in mine. Never got to see what car it came out of. Guess I oughta go check the stamping again..

Camshaft! Dangit I just got back from the wreckers this afternoon too...
I know I need one, can visibly see a higher ridge along the non wearing edge of a lobe.
