And you think 07 is going to be bad

In the year of 2010, there will be NO as in 0 ppm of sulphur in diesel fuel. Also, NOx emissions will result in the air exiting the motor being cleaner than what came in. Opinions?

500-15 so far has only caused a few old seals to give up. So all is good, we will revist this next year after some time and mileage has passed.

0 ppm I'm not sure. I'll have to consult a Bosch IP expert on that and see what they say.

That's OK, the sulphur itself does not help the fuel, it will just cost more to remove it and require additional additives. Reducing NOX is a good thing, again it will add to the cost of new cars. Personally, I'm not going to be driving anything newer than my 83.

If true, I would not worry too much. By then there should be a more significant supply of ASTM grade biodiesel which can then be used to more than make up for the lubricity needs. Carmakers will be behind at least b5 to keep that 'green' image going, and b5 as I understand it is more than sufficient to keep the seals lubed up.

It is possible because there is an ambient concentration of NOx in the atmosphere, however I don't think that the efficiency of the NOx removal system is high enough to reduce the exhaust concentration to below the ambient level.

I think he was just trying to make a point. Yes, the 2010 regs get a lot tougher, again. General Motors new line of diesels in development will meet the requirements. Also the company I work for is working with Cat to design 2010 compliant emission systems for the "BIG" engines. (Different regs then the smaller autos, but tightening up in its own way)

So is it fair to say that perhaps you were exaggerating a bit (or the manager was)? I'm certainly aware of diesels getting much cleaner now that ULSD is available, but I highly doubt diesel will have 0 ppm of sulphur anytime soon and whether the air coming out of the tail pipes will be cleaner than the air coming in is entirely dependent on where the vehicle is driven and I still doubt that it is even possible. I have read this kind of stuff about Honda hybrids in today's L.A. rush hour traffic and that is more believable.

Anyway, ultra-low sulphur and low emissions is all great stuff as long as the emission equipment doesn't break down or cause other problems.

God, I hope the NOx devices don't include urea injection. Yech.

"Yeah, I'll take a fill up of diesel. Oh, and I think I might be getting low on piss. Don't forget to check the oil.

He may of been exaggerating, but i told him of my love for my 240d's injection pump and he told me that all fuels have to be backward compatible, that it isn't a lead, lead free affair
