92 300D fuel pickup location
Ok can someone tell me where in the fuel tank the pickup is located? I have a 92 300D with a 2.5 5 cylinder, and I am parked at a bit of an incline. I have a bit less than 1/4 tank of fuel, and when I drove in to work today, it was driving flawlessly, but now that it has set for a few hours at the incline, it doesnt seem like it will fire at all, like it isnt getting any fuel. I am HOPING that all the fuel has settled at the opposite end of the pickup. Any thoughts?
And if anyone knows what side it is closer to, that would help also. Last edited by Biglex; 10-26-2006 at 06:38 PM. Reason: typo |

The fuel comes from the bottom of the tank. The only culprit, in that area, might be the fuel screen which unscrews from the bottom. Another possibility is a venting problem. Try loosening the cap and see if there is a major "whoosh" from a vacuum. Does that model have a see-thru in-line filter in the engine area?
Does your glow plug system seem to function properly?

Nothing at all, it has started flawlessly until now. Is it on the front or back of the tank?

I gonna guess you are nose up hill and that air has entered the fuel system somewhere. Have you had any minor nagging fuel leaks recently you havent fixed yet?
Can you get it pointed down hill and try to start?

well, you are exactly correct. I havent had any leaks that I have been able to see, but I was pointing nose up hill. I put the car in neutral and let it roll til it was flat, hit the starter and after it gurgled a bit, it fired right up. Havent had any problems with it starting the last 3 times since then as it was on level ground. Scared the hell out of me seeing as I just bought the car yesterday.

it sounds like you need to go over the fuel lines in the engine compartment with a fine tooth comb. possibly just replace all fuel lines and filters while you are at it. dieselgiant.com has a good write up on doing this very thing.
