How do I clear excess fuel from cylinder to prevent a Run Away engine?
 

The intake manifold is off for cleaning, new glow plugs, new injector return lines, and ALDA adjustment. While there I noticed that the intake ports in the head were gunked up also. I did a good job of cleaning them with a stiff plastic bristled brush, a tooth brush, and some WD40. Now I have WD40 in there...:dizzy2:

I stuck rags down in and soaked up the puddles on the valves that were shut. I'm sure that I got WD40 into at least a couple of the cylinders.

How do I clear excess fuel from cylinder to prevent a Run Away engine?

I'm thinking of turning the engine over a few times with the secondary fuel filter unscrewed and with the glow plugs removed. Sound good?

I wouldn't worry about a little WD40. For future reference you shouldn't do that. Knock some crap into the cylinder and before you know it you are doing a valve job!:eek: The EGR tar residue left on the valves will clear up after a few thousand miles on its own.

Just start it. Unless you put ALOT of it in there (like 1/2 the can), nothing will happen. The worst you might see is some smoke out the exhaust once it gets running.

Yep, that sounds about right, 1/2 of a short can. I soaked up a good bit of it though. I suspect that by the time I get everything back together it will have made it's way around the rings and into the engine oil.

The valves looked good. The ports leading down to the valves that were gunked up with soft, thick oil.

I suppose in theory you could have sprayed eneough into a cylinder to create a problem with hydro-locking which would concern me far more than creating a run-away condition...in order to run away the fuel would have to be continually added otherwise it would just burn up after a few revolutions, but if you put liquid of any kind down into the cylinder and it was enough to fill the area left for compression...well...that's a formula for real disaster...but I don't know how much you sprayed in there.

About 4 oz of WD40 spread across 6 cylinders. Of that about 1/2 went down the side of the block. I doubt hydrolock will be an issue.
