TD owners, be sure your SLS is working!

I just got a 1983 300TD, and doing the usual inspections, I found the fuel tank to be MAJORLY damaged. the entire bottom of the tank is covered with street scars, some on the verge of penetration, the fuel lines have been hit and ripped, as well. I knew the SLS was leaking before I bought the car, but man what a lousy design to place the tank this low in the back of the car! I plan to weld in a steel plate or put a full frame trailer hitch back there for better protection.
What was originally covering the tank? nothing? is there a factory skid plate for the tank?

Do you have this type of damage around the transmission and oil pan too?

Sounds like a case of some big stuff in the road or somebody high centered the car. The ground clearance on these TD'd is impressive...I live out in the sticks and have driven mine through some really rough stuff and suffered no ill effects. I slow way down of course, but have never even scraped the bottom on this car. The same can not be said of my Impala that drags every time I go out my own driveway!

Now I could see the type of damage you are talking about with like say a cinder block in the road or a big rock or backing up over a tall gutter.

nope, the oil pan is a little dinged, but the tranny is fine. I agree the ground clearance is impressive, IF the SLS is working. the one I got has major leaks, and cannot stay full, so the PO's driving it without fluid and the thing drags the ground... not good.

My TD has a big dent right in the middle from one of its po's.Maybe the SLS wasnt working at the time. I did touch bottom once in the back coming out of a diveway with a big dip. Like the idea of a skid plate and I too want to put a hitch on but havent seen one that seems strong enough. If you do this please keep us posted.

was going to say the same thing. My valves are leaky so when the engine is off it's definitely a low rider. If the SLS didn't pump it back up I'd be in real trouble.

Valve body

If it leaks down overnight, rebuild the valve body - search the threads on how do it. It's about a $50 repair and well worth the money. Also, if the ride is bouncy (mine after valve body rebuild), change the nitrogen cells. HUGE difference in ride.
